Children Just Like Me: Celebrations by Anabel and Barnabas Kindersley (1 – 3)

This book is a collaboration between UNICEF and DK.  Organized by season, this book features holidays from all over the world.  With colorful pictures, each page defines the holiday, explains what people celebrate, and where the holiday is celebrated.  Traditional clothing, crafts, and food are noted.  Children as young as three can learn from the beautiful pictures; the text is most appropriate for grades 1 – 3.  One unique and wonderful feature is that at the back of the book, there is a two-page spread about the journalists/photographers who traveled the world to create the book.  Finally there is a twelve-month calendar, which lists some of the main holidays celebrated in different countries.

Please note that there are other excellent books in this series to help children build their empathy muscles.  Each of these UNICEF and DK collaborations utilizes a similar layout.  The Kindersley duo behind Children Just Like Me: Celebrations also created the equally wonderful Children Just Like Me: A Unique Celebration of Children Around the World and the compendium, Children Just Like Me: Our Favorite Stories.
