Books about Holi (होली)

From March 12 – 13, Holi (होली) will be celebrated.

Unfortunately, as of now, there are not many children’s books published in English about Holi.

Here is a list of titles:

Rani Celebrates Holi by Anita Badhwar (K – 1): (Disclaimer: This book was provided free of charge by the author/publisher Anita Badhwar, through Multicultural Children’s Book Day in exchange for an honest review.)  Rani Celebrates Holi tells the story of Little Princess Rani, helping the Kingdom in India where she resides, to celebrate Holi.  There are a few vocabulary words introduced, given context, and repeated throughout the picture book.  The final page offers The Meaning of Holi, which is informative.  The illustrations are impersonal, computer-generated, and simple, and don’t enhance the story.  I would recommend this book as a supplemental read to a Holi classroom unit, after beginning with Holi (Celebrations in My World), Holi (Rookie Read-About Holidays), or Holi: Festivals Around the World.

It’s Time for Holi! By Amita Roy Shah (Pre-K – 3)

Amma, Tell Me About Holi! By Bhakti Mathur (Kindergarten – 2)

Holi (Celebrations in My World) by Lynn Pepas (Kindergarten – 3)

Holi (Rookie Read-About Holidays) by Uma Krishnaswami (Kindergarten – 2)

Holi: Festivals Around the World by Grace Jones (Kindergarten – 3)
